Volunteer at Wave Hill
Through year-round, enriching opportunities, our volunteers make a lasting impact to Wave Hill and its mission. Whether you like being out in the garden, interacting with visitors, or quieter behind-the-scenes tasks, there’s something for you at Wave Hill.
With so much to do and so many places to go in New York City, we are grateful for our passionate volunteers who choose to spend their time at Wave Hill. Volunteers are valued members of the Wave Hill family and champions of the garden and its many arts, education, and nature programming.

Why volunteer?
As a volunteer, you’ll learn new skills, develop strong friendships, and connect with other nature, art, and science enthusiasts.
Volunteering can take on many different forms: creating a welcoming environment for visitors, supporting events and programs, leading garden walks, performing administrative duties, gardening, and more!
Whether you’re looking for a regular commitment or prefer a more flexible schedule, prefer to work indoors or outside in the garden, Wave Hill welcomes you.
Volunteers receive many benefits including:
- Free admission to the garden
- Discounts on programs and at The Café and Shop
- Special events just for volunteers
- Educational and training opportunities
- Participation in a supportive and creative environment with opportunities to work directly with staff members and network with experts in the field

Garden Guide
Lead public and private garden walks or tours focused on horticulture and Wave Hill history. Guides meet monthly for continuing education and interpretation training.

Program Support
Provide logistical support for our year-round, adult and family programming. Prep materials, give wayfinding or workshop directions, and work behind the scenes.

Engaging Visitors
Serve as an ambassador and play a pivotal role in visitors creating wonderful memories in the garden. Greet and guide visitors, assist in the Shop, or staff information tables.

Horticulture
Get your hands dirty and connect with the earth! Tasks may include weeding, mulching, planting, pruning, and assisting with documenting our collection.

Every time I give a tour there are new surprises in the gardens and I get to share them with our guests.
