School Programs Educator: Summer 2025

The Education Department provides hands-on learning experiences for children, youth, teachers, and intergenerational groups of visitors in the arts and sciences to educate and inspire life-long learners. School Programs at Wave Hill connect students to the natural world with high quality, personal, and hands-on experiences.

Wave Hill is seeking a seasonal educator to co-teach nature-based summer camp for an elementary school audience. The seasonal educator is responsible for assisting Wave Hill educators with instruction, program preparation and administration. The educator works with Wave Hill staff to ensure a safe and fun summer for all campers. Responsibilities include:

  • Co-teaching on-site nature-based summer camp programs for an elementary school audience grades 1st through 5th.
  • Preparing for programs by reading lesson plans, packing educator bags with materials, and setting up and breaking down teaching spaces.
  • Greeting campers at the front gate and assisting with dismissal at the end of the day.
  • Managing camp materials such as art supplies, clipboards, pencils, etc.
  • Assisting Wave Hill Staff with camp administrative duties such as taking attendance.
  • Prioritizing camper safety, particularly during outdoor activities.
  • Assisting Wave Hill educators with additional summer programs as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience working with elementary school aged children, particularly experience teaching children in a non-formal settings such as summer camp is preferred
  • Demonstrable interest in life science, nature, and art
  • Comfortable working outdoors during summer months in spaces with mixed-material pathways and varying elevations
  • Clear, effective communication skills
  • Enthusiastic and flexible when handling unexpected situations

Workspace

The primary program area takes place on the lower level of Wave Hill House, which is wheelchair-accessible. There is an accessible, ground-level entrance at the front of the building with a power-assist door. The restroom on the ground level is all-gender and ADA-compliant. Additional ADA-compliant restrooms are available on the lower level, which can be accessed by elevator. Due to the historic nature of Wave Hill House, the education program office located on the third floor is not wheelchair accessible. This area is reachable by a flight of wooden stairs totaling 19 steps. When outside, the educator should expect to traverse a variety of routes along mixed-material pathways and varying elevations. 

Schedule and Salary

This is a seasonal position from July 7 through August 15, 2025. 35 hours a week, Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 4pm, with a half-hour lunch break. Additional paid training hours may be required. Position includes four weeks of camp and two weeks of program preparation. The hourly pay rate is $20 per hour.
