John Nally 2025 Internship

A rigorous, hands-on apprenticeship

Every year, we seek garden enthusiasts looking to better understand the principles of horticulture. They work alongside Wave Hill gardeners from early spring to late fall during this eight-month paid internship.

The John Nally Intern Program at Wave Hill was established in honor of John Nally, a gardener and Wave Hill’s curator of plants, whose participation here was integral to creating the expansive collections that comprise the foundations of our current gardens. Because his intense passion for gardening was contagious, the internship was considered the finest means of carrying on his mission.

The program is best described as a hands-on apprenticeship designed to further an understanding of the principles of horticulture. In most cases, the interns are seeking a career in the profession and are hoping to round out their education with daily work experience.

How to Apply

The application period is open for the 2025 John Nally Internship. Applicants should complete an online form by Friday, February 14, 2025.

Responsibilities

Duties include mulching the garden beds, as well as large tracts of our woodlands; digging and planting shrubs, trees, perennials and annuals; and, of course, weeding beds and watering our many containers in the nursery areas and in areas on public display. The internship is not for those seeking an intellectual exercise alone, nor for those seeking an administrative position in the field. This is a rigorous, hands-on experience with physically demanding work in all kinds of weather.

Requirements

Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, and a clean, valid driver’s license.

Salary

The John Nally Internship encompasses a full garden season from April 7, 2025, to November 21, 2025. The work schedule is 8:30 to 4:30 five days per week with some weekend obligations. Pay is $20 per hour.
