Salvador Muñoz
2020 New York Community Trust Van Lier Fellow Salvador Muñoz draws on his identity as a third-generation Xicano, as well as his social practice focused on queer people of color, to create an installation that highlights cultural histories that have been lost due to colonial exploitation. On the Sun Porch, the centerpiece is a large-scale sculpture honoring Xochipilli, the Mexica deity associated with flowers, creativity and sexuality. Adorned with glitter and vibrant, faux flora, Muñoz’s sculpture taps into a material lineage of flamboyancy, excess and kitsch to tease out Xochipilli's queerness. As part of the installation, Muñoz is also developing a community driven project that engages with social issues, offering herbal remedies and resources for queer people of color.
