Roger Ferney-Cortés, "Johny Paleta" storyboard, 2024. Courtesy of the artist.

Roger Ferney-Cortés invokes the iconic “paletero” street cart vendor of popsicles and ice cream in his interactive mobile sculpture, Johny Paleta. Fabricated to scale on wheels, the sculpture is composed of a retractable mirrored infinity cube visible through a series of apertures shaped after flora found at Wave Hill. Visitors are invited to peer into a microcosm that reflects and refracts their faces and bodies, the environment and light, capturing a fleeting moment in the garden. On Sat, Jul 20 at 3PM and on Sat, Aug 10 at 1PM, Johny Paleta will traverse the grounds of Wave Hill, offering a playful and interactive artwork that reflects the beauty of visitors and their communities, and serves as an homage to the street vendor culture of immigrant communities in the Bronx and beyond. Organized as part of the exhibition Roger Ferney-Cortés: Johny Paleta, on view in the Sunroom Project Space through Sun, Aug 11.

Registration encouraged but not required; online or by calling 718.540.3200 x251.

This activation involves visitors following Johny Paleta along the paved pathways of Wave Hill. Johny Paleta will pause at various locations in both the sun and shade for viewer interaction. The paved pathways are wheelchair accessible. Johny Paleta may also roll onto grassy areas, some of which may not be wheelchair accessible.
