Dive into the world of fungi and learn how to cultivate your own edible mushrooms at home!  Aubrey Carter, mycologist and author of the newsletter Mushroom Monday, begins the workshop with a brief walk through the woodlands to identify and chat about optimal conditions for fungal growth. Then gather indoors to build oyster mushroom “grow kits” using household materials that are often treated as waste. Participants will explore mushroom cultivation and take home their own grow kit with instructions. The woodland walk is optional; participants who prefer to skip the walk should report to Armor Hall by 12:30pm for the hands-on portion of the program. Severe weather cancels the walk.

Advance registration is encouraged online or by calling 718.549.3200 x251. Day-of registration based on availability and not guaranteed.

Questions? Please email us at information@wavehill.org or call the telephone number and extension above.

Wave Hill House and Armor Hall are wheelchair-accessible. There is an accessible, ground-level entrance at the front of the building with a power-assist door. The restroom on the ground level is all-gender and ADA-compliant. Additional ADA-compliant restrooms are available on the lower level, which can be accessed by elevator. The Herbert & Hyonja Abrons Woodland features varied, unpaved walking trails traversing eight acres. The trails include rustic steps, steep changes in grade and uneven terrain. A trail map at the north and south entrances indicates the length and character of each trail.

Aubrey got into mushrooms through an ecological lens. He has worked at different ecological institutions in and around the NYC area - most prominently with the Central Park Conservancy and Manitou Point Preserve in Garrison, NY.  While at Central Park, Aubrey started sending out a weekly mushroom newsletter to coworkers, entitled Mushroom Monday, with photos and a profile of a different mushroom he found in the park. He has grown the newsletter since leaving the park to over 1,000 subscribers and features different mushrooms he finds throughout his travels (but most typically from the Hudson Valley where he currently resides). You can sign up to receive the newsletter and read all archived posts at mushroommonday.com. Additionally, he has cultivated mushrooms both indoors and outdoors, spoken at different mycological conferences, leads both public and private mushroom walks, and is an active member in both the New York Mycological Society and Mid-Hudson Mycological Association.
