Día de Los Muertos Art Workshop: Papel Picado with Blanka Amezkua / Taller de Arte: Papel Picado con Blanka Amezkua
Learn about papel picado, a traditional folk art from Mexico. Artist Blanka Amezkua shares this artform and its significance during Día de los Muertos. Using chisel tools or scissors, brightly colored tissue paper and floral designs as guides, create mini banners to take home for your own celebrations. All materials provided. Día de los Muertos event.
Registration is not required for this drop-in event. Recommended for ages eight and up. The artist will give a demonstration of the traditional papel picado techniques at 1:00PM and 2:00PM and then guide participants in the process.
Wave Hill House is located along a paved route with moderate changes in grade. The building is wheelchair-accessible. There is an accessible, ground-level entrance at the front of the building with a power-assist door. The restroom on the ground level is all-gender and ADA-compliant. Additional ADA-compliant restrooms are available on the lower level, which can be accessed by elevator.

La casa Wave Hill se sitúa a la vera de un camino pavimentado con leves cambios de pendiente. La planta baja y el nivel inferior de la casa Wave Hill cuentan con acceso para personas en silla de ruedas. El frente del edificio, en su planta baja, cuenta con una puerta electromecánica para el ingreso de personas con discapacidad. El baño de la planta baja es apto para personas de cualquier género y cumple los requisitos de la ADA. El nivel inferior, al que se accede por ascensor, cuenta con baños adicionales que cumplen con los requisitos de la ADA.

Blanka Amezkua
Blanka is an interdisciplinary artist, cultural promoter, educator, and project creator with formal training as a painter. She has exhibited her work at venues such as MoMA/P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, Queens Museum, El Museo del Barrio, the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, Sugar Hill Children’s Museum, San Diego Art Institute, the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, Art Base in Brussels, among others. Her practice is deeply influenced by folk art and popular culture. Mention of her work and projects can be found in various notable national and international publications such as the New York Times, BOMB, Hyperallergic, ArtNews, TimeOut as well as many others.
In 2008, she launched the Bronx Blue Bedroom Project (BBBP), an artist-run initiative in her bedroom that continued until 2010. Between 2010 and 2016, she divided her time between New York and Athens. Inspired by BBBP, she started FoKiaNou 24/7 in central Athens. From 2016 to 2024, she operated AAA3A, an alternative artist-run project in her South Bronx living room, offering food, dialogue, workshops, and art.Currently, Blanka is developing AAA3A/migrates, a project that will invite artists to engage in durational cultural exchanges in non-domestic and alternative spaces. She is also an active member of Running for Ayotzinapa 43, an international community of runners based in NYC that raises awareness about human rights violations worldwide.
