Forest Project Assistant Manager
Full-Time

The Program
The oldest urban woodland conservation program of its kind in the United States, the Forest Project at Wave Hill engages diverse community groups in fieldwork and environmental rehabilitation projects that help to improve the quality of life in the Bronx by preserving its natural resources and public green spaces. Since 1980, our disturbed woodlands have been managed to favor native species, to control invasive non native species, and to improve public access by maintaining trails and slowing erosion. We offer hands on work experience through volunteer and education programs related to land management and woodland ecology.
Responsibilities
The Forest Project Assistant Manager helps to implement urban woodland and green space rehabilitation plans and co leads related educational programs. The programs are varied to meet the needs and abilities of diverse groups of students, teachers, and the general public (including special needs groups).
Summer:
• Helps supervise approximately 35 students in a summer high school internship
• Helps train, mentor and supervise college-age Crew Leaders
• Maintains contact with these intern alumni after the summer
• Co-leads a collaborative course at Lehman College
• Assists with related administrative tasks
School-year:
• Helps recruit, interview and hire Bronx area high school students to participate in summer internship
• Maintains a database for program statistics
• Creates and edits flyers and mailings, and some report writing
• Assists in planning and leading reunion events
• Co-leads spring/fall Saturday volunteering series
• Co-leads educational programming primarily for high school students

Requirements
We are seeking an enthusiastic, self motivated person who enjoys balancing both hard physical labor outdoors and concentrated office work. The Assistant Manager should be people oriented, have a general knowledge of local ecology, and experience supervising teenagers. A successful candidate must be able to work Saturdays in spring and fall, have a valid drivers license and hold a related Bachelor's degree. Knowledge of local plants, street trees and/or GIS/GPS experience preferred.

Salary

Low 30,000’s (depending on experience) and excellent benefits package

Gardener
Full-Time

Reporting to the Director of Horticulture, and under general supervision of the assistant director of Horticulture, the position requires that the person selected bring sound horticultural practices to bear in a multitude of gardening situations and related work. It involves hard physical labor throughout the year. The successful candidate will be an experienced gardener trained to maintain and develop gardens and greenhouse collections; this includes planting, cultivating, propagating, watering, fertilizing, pruning, mulching, pest and weed control and lawn maintenance. The Gardener will maintain and enhance the unique landscape of Wave Hill while working within a creative, collaborative department.
Requirements:  Passion for gardening and desire to work with a diverse collection of hardy and tender plants;
Minimum three years experience of sound horticultural practice; Familiarity with the operation of power and hand tools; A valid driver’s license; Willingness to work outdoors under all weather conditions; Ability to work alone and with others in a team-based organization; Some weekends required; Certification as pesticide applicator is desirable; Bachelor’s degree preferred.

School Programs Educator
Part-time, Seasonal (Sept. 2008 through mid-June 2009)

Join a dynamic team of Wave Hill educators who co-lead and evaluate art- and science-based programs. Educators develop a solid understanding of Wave Hill’s core content to make high quality experiences fun and memorable. Educators lead a wide variety of educational programming including multi-session and single-session workshops and theatre-based presentations. In addition to teaching and assisting with programs on- and off-site, duties include regularly preparing & breaking down materials in an organized manner and other tasks as deemed necessary. Part-time positions are 21 hours per week, Tuesday-Friday with occasional weekends required. Commitment is from Sept. 2008 through mid-June 2009.
Requirements: Bachelor’s degree; Master’s preferred; Previous teaching in natural sciences and interest in the arts; Knowledge of how children learn and willingness to work with special needs audiences; Programming experience in museums, theatre and/or outdoor settings advantageous; Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills; Team spirit essential; Proficiency in Spanish is a plus.
Salary: $15.00 - $16.50/hr, depending on education and experience

Security Officer
Seasonal

As a member of the Visitor Services Department, the Security Officer plays an integral role in helping to provide a positive visitor experience. The Security Officer position reports directly to the Security Supervisor.
Responsibilities: Assist with crowd and vehicle control. Enforce Wave Hills rules and regulations. Patrol the grounds. Set-up conference facilities and equipment for public and private events. Responsible for in-house mail delivery. Perform some custodial duties during inclement weather. Must be available to work evening event assignments.
Qualifications: Must be New York certified with at least 3 years experience in the security field.
Background in fire prevention or NYC Fire Guard a plus. Must have a valid driver’s license. Experience in a public garden or cultural institution preferable. Enthusiastic, self motivated with the ability to interact with the public and staff. Must be able to lift and carry equipment including folding tables, chairs and boxes. Must be able to work varied hours including weekends.
Salary: $9.00 to $11.00 per hour

Volunteer Manager
Part-Time

Job Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Director of Visitor Services the Volunteer Manager will:
• organize the recruitment, screening, placement and training, retention and record keeping of our 80 active volunteers;
• work with each of the Wave Hill departments to assess their volunteer needs;
• respond to all inquiries regarding volunteer opportunities;
• establish ties with community agencies, volunteer organizations and corporations;
• coordinate and lead training sessions as needed and organize recognition event;
• maintain effective records of volunteer activities and create statistical and other reports as needed for development staff;
• attend monthly Garden Guide meetings, record and distribute minutes, help coordinate guide trips, follow up on tour scheduling, maintain tour spreadsheet;
Qualifications: Must be a self –motivated and well organized individual.  Strong interpersonal and communication skills required.  Must be able to develop and implement new processes and procedures.  Bachelor’s degree required.  Minimum three years experience working in volunteer services or other related area.  Proficient in word processing, spreadsheets and Email programs.  Knowledge of Database a plus.  Flexible work schedule.
